chives and dill Well, I broke down and got a second aerogarden.  It's been planted with herbs, and most of them seem to be sprouting well.  Here's the chives (out of focus in the front) and dill.  basil And two kinds of basil--the purple in the front and the Italian in the back.  The thyme and mint have also sprouted, but the parsley is still just sitting there.  And I've learned something.  The instructions say to leave the paper on the pods--do it, even when they come loose and don't want to.  Otherwise, your sprouts will die.  I have two dead lettuce pods that taught me that.

In other news, the hubby picked up a vintage quilting frame at a local thrift shop.  We've test assembled it, and it's awesome.  I'll have to re-assemble it at some point and take photos.  This means I get to pull the quilting stuff back out!  Oh, dear.  There's never going to be enough time to get it all done, is there?

topsy turvies Today you get to see the edible outdoor segment of my garden.  Yes, I got suckered into the Topsy Turvy planters.  Here's my set of 4, all with a different variety of tomato.  I have red beefsteak, celebrity, and a couple of others I can't remember right now.  And yes, the one on the end is shorter than the others.  The hubby made the tripods from conduit pipe, and the original plan was for something slightly different, but that didn't work the way he wanted it, which is why one was cut a bit smaller.  I think I need to weed out there, and maybe plant some marigolds or something.  I don't really like marigolds--they smell weird to me--but they're supposed to help repel insects, so I can live with it.  (I don't particularly like the smell of lavender, either.  I guess I'm a bit odd that way.)tomato

I also have a tiny tomato growing.  It's about the size of my thumb nail, so objects on your computer screen may be larger than they appear.  ;)  This one is on the celebrity plant--the closest one in the photo.  The beefsteak is the farthest, and on the short tripod.  I have another, smaller tomato on the third plant (right before the beefsteak).  It's barely there, so I didn't do a photo yet.  I'll probably wait until some of these start getting bigger or maybe ripening before I go take photos again.  Mmmmmm.....tomatoes.

aerogarden The hubby brought me home a surprise the other day.  An AeroGarden.  It has the grow lights built in, and the seeds come on little sponge pods you stick in and your plants grow hydroponically.  So no dirt in my kitchen!  It has little green house domes that go over the pods until they get big enough.  Here it is, as of yesterday.

mesclun mix sprouts And here's one of the plants that was recently un-domed.  We started off with the Mesclun salad mix, since they have a 3 month life span before they start to bolt.  So that 3 months will be the hottest part of summer here, and I get to have garden fresh lettuce, all summer long.  We also have the cherry tomato pack and the herb garden pack.  And I ordered another AeroGarden off their outlet page online.  So....when it gets here, a semi-permanent herb garden, and once the lettuce is gone, I get to have tomatoes.  They also have packs for strawberries, peppers, other herb types (Italian, French, etc.), other lettuce/salad/greens packs (thinking about picking up the greens one--it has spinach and kale), and flowers.  But if I'm going to grow something in my house, right in my kitchen, I want to eat it.  So I probably won't get the flowers.  They also have smaller 3 pod units and "space saver" 6 pod units.  And one of the 3 pod ones looks like a ladybug.  It's really cute!  But I'll stick with my edibles and 7 pods for now.  But hey--isn't that a bunch of growth for plants less than a week old?  Hooray!

challenge wool spun Remember this?  The green challenge wool?  Well, that bit on the toilet paper tube never got plied.  I tried, but it decided to tangle unmercifully, so I cussed at it, and felt much better when I threw the whole snarl into the trash.  The skein, however did get knit up into a short, lacy scarf.  And I knew it was going to be too short.  So I started rumaging around the stash and came up with some lace weight llama singles I had spun.  I plied that on the Golding spindle, and then used it to put on the "Demon Godmother" border.  It's a nice, wide border (24 stitches in the widest part) with an uneven edge.  The border is in a natural fawn color, and I thought it went well with the green.  And why am I not showing you a photo of the finished scarf?  I had camnesia and forgot to take a photo of it.    I started blocking it after I finished it around 12:30 am on June 1, the day they were due.  I pulled the pins out in the early afternoon and got it down to Colonial Fiber Arts by 4 pm.  It was dry, but I didn't have the presense of mind to take a photo of it.  Maybe when I get it back....

But thanks, Milly, for asking about it.

Well, I've been busy.  log cabin in progress I've been knitting a baby blanket for the short person's cousin, due in July.  Since gender is unknown, I'm using rainbow pastels and white with pastel flecks.

winter done I finished plying the blue/grey/black roving I've been spinning for a while.  It looks to be a laceweight, and should make a pretty shawl.

waterbflplied Then there's this gorgeous hand-dyed BFL.  I plied some up, and I think this is going to stay with me.  No gifting of this one allowed.  :)

challenge wool spun And I spun and plied the challenge wool.  And when I washed it, some of the dye came out.  I thought I had plied it all, but found the singles wrapped on the toilet paper tube when I was getting things together for photos this morning.  I'm still not sure what to make with it.
